The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has granted its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso significant authority to nominate top officials for the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued Tuesday by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the party said the duo would nominate the Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), campaign spokesman, deputy spokesman, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director, and other key officials working in consultation with party leadership.
Director said the arrangement followed consultations involving Obi, Kwankwaso, the party’s National Leader, and other leaders. It aims to foster inclusiveness and cohesion within the campaign structure.
The party noted that the council’s organogram was prepared in August and shared with Obi and Kwankwaso for their input. Nominations have also come in from stakeholders across the country.
The NDC will formally announce and inaugurate the council once the candidates’ recommendations are received.
An earlier plan to inaugurate the council in the first week of September was delayed due to Obi’s travel schedule.
The party has also prepared a campaign timetable since August but is waiting for funding and fundraising arrangements, which the candidates are expected to lead.
On finances, Director explained that all funds raised will go into a dedicated presidential campaign account, managed jointly by officials nominated by Obi and Kwankwaso together with the party’s National Treasurer.
The Finance Director and deputy will collaborate with the Treasurer to ensure transparency and accountability, as the party must report to the Independent National Electoral Commission under the Electoral Act.
Director appealed to all NDC candidates and their supporters to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC,” he said.
