You’re Raising Embarrassing Questions, Tinubu Can Travel Anywhere – Abati to Atiku

Former presidential aide and Arise Television anchor, Reuben Abati, has dismissed criticisms from African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar over President Bola Tinubu’s three-week vacation in Europe.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Monday, Abati described Atiku’s remarks as “embarrassing” and poorly researched.

He argued that Tinubu is constitutionally entitled to travel, provided his absence does not exceed the 21-day threshold outlined in Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, which would otherwise require a formal transfer of power.

Atiku had earlier condemned Tinubu’s absence, calling it a “disturbing vacuum of political leadership” amid Nigeria’s economic hardship. But Abati countered, saying:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has gone on what they call a working vacation for three weeks, which he is entitled to. If the president travels and it doesn’t exceed 21 days, he doesn’t have to hand over.”

He added that the real concern should be the simultaneous absence of both the president and vice president, noting that Vice President Kashim Shettima was in Angola at the time Tinubu departed for Europe.

Abati concluded that while the ruling APC explained Tinubu’s trip as a chance to “refuel,” the opposition should focus on substantive governance issues rather than questioning the president’s right to travel.
