The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has begun the demolition of properties blocking waterways in Maitama, Abuja, following last Sunday’s flooding.
After inspecting affected areas, Wike directed that all buildings obstructing drainage channels and water passages in Maitama and other parts of the capital be pulled down before Saturday.
“We have seen where people blocked channels where water should pass. They did that believing nothing will happen. But something has happened, and I’m going to bring those houses down. Every house on the water channel will go down,” Wike declared.
The minister emphasized that ignoring environmental regulations had worsened flooding in Abuja, warning that enforcement would be strict to prevent future disasters.
