The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said Governor Ademola Adeleke’s win in the Osun State governorship election was possible because President Bola Tinubu ensured the poll was free and fair.
Speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike dismissed claims that the Federal Government manipulated the August 15 election.
He argued that the outcome demonstrated Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles.
“The President called him… congratulating him (Adeleke). What does it tell you? If Tinubu did not allow a free and fair election, would they have won? No!” Wike stated.
The minister rejected suggestions that “federal might” was deployed, recalling his own experience of resisting such influence in past elections.
He urged observers not to equate off-season governorship polls with presidential contests, stressing that each election carried its own dynamics.
Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, defeated APC’s Bola Oyebamiji with 511,067 votes to 444,815, winning 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas.
Wike also addressed the flooding crisis in parts of the FCT, warning against politicising the issue.
He noted that many of the structures obstructing waterways were built by wealthy Nigerians years before the current administration, and insisted that both government officials and residents must take responsibility for preventing future disasters.
