Dele Odule, the ace Nigerian actor, has mourned his late friend and colleague Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as ‘Ogogo’, recalling their nearly 40-year friendship.
In a tribute after Ogogo’s death and burial,
Odule spoke about the close bond he shared with Ogogo alongside Yinka Quadri,
another Nollywood actor.
Odule said their friendship began when they were young men
trying to navigate life and developed into a relationship that lasted for
decades.
Odule added that Ogogo’s death had left a void that could
not be filled.
“Taiwo, this is a loss that no words I put out can
adequately describe,” he wrote.
“My dear friend and brother of nearly 40 years. Ours was one
of those friendships that life just blesses one with.
“When Taiwo loved you, he loved you wholeheartedly. Always
loyal, generous and ever ready to stand by the people he cared about.
“Doesn’t matter what your tribal or religious inclinations
are or even your background at all. God gave him an incredible ability to
connect with people.
Odule also described Ogogo as a legend whose contributions
to Yoruba theatre and film will be remembered.
“Ogogo the actor! Action man! Deeply rooted to the game. A
legend. A proud Yewa Yoruba man. Carried this craft on his back squarely.
“Who will Yinka and I banter with now? You won’t be here to
remind me that you are my big brother. You have left Yinka to continue that
with me.
“We will both miss the brotherhood we shared for years.
“Your departure has left a space that cannot be filled. Even
the whole world knows that we didn’t just lose our colleague. We lost a
brother.”
Ogogo died on Sunday at age 66 after battling cancer.
He was a prominent figure in Yoruba-language theatre and
film, with a career spanning more than four decades.
He began acting in 1981 while working as an auto mechanic at
the Lagos State Water Corporation, before focusing exclusively on the craft in
1994.
