Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have foiled an attack by Boko Haram terrorists on Kukawa town in Borno State, killing several insurgents in coordinated ground and air operations.
The Acting Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
Goni said the terrorists attacked troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion deployed in Kukawa at about 10:50 p.m. on August 28, 2026.
The troops responded with direct and indirect fire, successfully repelling the assault and forcing the attackers to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
Several terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while others sustained gunshot wounds as they fled.
Subsequent exploitation by ground troops led to the recovery of some of the terrorists’ bodies.As the insurgents withdrew on motorcycles, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai was deployed to intercept them.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the air assets engaged terrorists taking cover under trees, neutralising an estimated 10 of them.Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets of the Multinational Joint Task Force later tracked about 20 motorcycles carrying fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis.
This intelligence enabled a follow-up precision air strike that killed an additional 15 terrorists and destroyed 10 motorcycles.
During further ground operations, troops recovered two motorcycles, neutralised another terrorist and recovered assorted ammunition and other items.
The military said the coordinated response disrupted the attack, blocked the terrorists’ withdrawal routes and further degraded their ability to regroup or launch sustained assaults in the area.
Four military personnel sustained injuries during the engagement. None of the injuries was life-threatening.
The wounded soldiers were evacuated by air for medical attention and are said to be in stable condition.
Troops have commenced reorganisation and further exploitation of the area, while battle damage assessment and evaluation of the operation continue.
