Rufai Oseni Challenges Credibility of NBS Inflation Figures

Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni, has cast doubt on Nigeria’s latest inflation statistics, disputing the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) report that headline inflation fell to 15.43 percent in July 2026.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Tuesday, Oseni argued that the figures do not reflect the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians in the marketplace.

“I don’t believe a lot of the data that comes out of this administration,” he said, describing the reported decline as a “charade of deceit.”

He questioned why commodity prices remain high despite claims of falling inflation, adding: “Okay, let’s keep deceiving ourselves. One day, we will come to the market square and clap for ourselves. Let the deceit continue.”

Oseni also criticized what he described as a lack of accountability in government spending, citing unresolved questions over trillions of naira in extra-budgetary expenditures.

He pointed to inconsistencies in official statements about Nigeria’s refineries, noting that promises of revival have not matched reality.

The NBS had announced on Monday that inflation dropped from 15.91 percent in June to 15.43 percent in July.

However, Oseni’s remarks highlight growing skepticism among analysts and citizens who argue that the reported figures fail to capture the persistent rise in the cost of essential goods and services.
