Reps Group Seeks Probe of Fadahunsi, Osun Election Violence

The Save Democracy Group, a bipartisan caucus in the House of Representatives, has demanded a full investigation into the violence and fatalities linked to the 2026 Osun State governorship election, warning that political ambition must never justify the loss of Nigerian lives.

In a statement signed by lawmakers Awaji-Inombek Abiante (NDC, Rivers), Abubakar Kusada (APC, Katsina), and Mansur Jega (ADC, Kebbi), the group urged security agencies and rights bodies to probe all incidents of political killings and hold perpetrators accountable.

The lawmakers also called for an inquiry into a viral video allegedly showing Senator Francis Fadahunsi making comments interpreted as inciting supporters to attack Accord Party members in Ilesa.

While Fadahunsi has denied the allegation, the group insisted that authorities must independently examine the footage and its context.Civil society reports documented 56 violent incidents and 14 deaths tied to the election, while police confirmed investigating 30 suspected politically motivated killings.

The group lamented that despite heavy security deployment, lives were still lost, questioning whether resources were used effectively.

“Political leaders occupy positions of influence and must understand that words capable of encouraging violence can have deadly consequences in an already volatile environment,” the group stated.

Beyond Osun, the lawmakers highlighted ongoing insecurity in Kebbi and Sokoto, where police officers and civilians have been killed in recent attacks.

They argued that Nigeria cannot “police elections more effectively than it protects its citizens.”
