The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) failed to sit on Tuesday, after key witnesses, including the purported Director-General did not appear before lawmakers.
The committee, set up to unravel the operations of the alleged fake agency, was expected to continue its inquiry into how PFIPC found its way into official government documents and even the 2026 Appropriation Act.
However, proceedings were stalled when the police informed lawmakers that the supposed DG, Adeyemi Adeniyi, remained in custody under a valid Federal High Court order. His release, they explained, would require fresh authorization.
Officials from the State House had earlier distanced the Presidency from PFIPC, describing documents linked to the agency as forged.
They stressed that no such council was ever established by the Presidency, and that the names and departments cited in the documents did not exist within the State House.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also admitted issuing official number plates to PFIPC, but later discovered the agency lacked legal recognition.
Other government institutions including the Budget Office, Accountant-General’s Office, and Central Bank of Nigeria have denied any dealings with the council.
Lawmakers expressed concern that PFIPC managed to infiltrate government processes despite lacking legitimacy, raising questions about oversight and accountability.
The committee is now expected to seek a reproduction warrant from the court to compel police to present the detained DG at its next sitting.
