The Rivers State Police Command has detained a police corporal and other officers involved in the fatal sh@oting of a motorist in Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Thursday, 27 August 2026, at the Agip-Ada George Junction.
Corporal Alfred Louis, attached to the Rivers State Police Command, allegedly shot and killed Anthony Obodo, a 22-year-old recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt.
According to eyewitness accounts, police officers flagged down Obodo’s vehicle, but he did not stop. Officers pursued the vehicle, after which one of them opened fire.
Three shots were reportedly fired; one bullet struck Obodo in the back and pierced his chest. The vehicle then lost control, veered off the road and crashed into passers-by, injuring at least two or three people.
Residents rushed the unconscious and bleeding driver to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Chaos ensued in the area.
The officer involved was later attacked and assaulted by an angry mob, sustaining multiple injuries. Other police personnel intervened to rescue him.
In a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, the police confirmed the incident.
Preliminary information indicated that an altercation and scuffle between Obodo and the officer led to the gunshot that caused the victim’s death and injuries to passers-by.
The command said Corporal Alfred Louis and members of his team have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
They will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
