The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will not channel money from fuel subsidy savings to state governors in the manner of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, nor will he restore the oil cabals that previously benefited from the subsidy regime, as African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Atiku Abubakar has proposed.
Theo Abu Agada, NDC Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, made the remarks in a post on X. He noted that Tinubu ended the fuel subsidy at his inauguration in 2023, while Atiku recently reignited debate by suggesting a return of the subsidy if elected in 2027.
Agada said Obi has consistently advocated transparent management of subsidy-related funds rather than their restoration. “For our presidential candidate, he will not put the money in the pockets of the governors like Tinubu, and he will not bring back the oil cabals that were benefiting from the subsidy scam, as Atiku is proposing,” he wrote.
Instead, Agada stated, the funds would go directly to Nigerians and be invested in quality healthcare facilities, transport infrastructure, schools, and programmes that create jobs. He also questioned Atiku’s shift in position, noting that the former vice president had supported removing the subsidy in 2023.
