Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has said that core Northerners are beginning to embrace African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a post on X, Bashir described this as the first time in Atiku’s political career that the core North has accepted him. “Atiku is gaining traction in the North. For the first time in his political career, he is being embraced by the core North, in part because of his mantra of being the most detribalised, historically, of the bunch,” he wrote.
He added that Atiku’s fuel subsidy debate is unsettling the government. “That calculus could be the game-changer. They are rattled. This subsidy debate forged by Atiku forms a perfect narrative to the realities on the ground,” Bashir stated.
In the same post, he reflected on visits to his father, noting the elder El-Rufai’s resilience and uplifting spirit. When asked whether the sacrifices remained worthwhile, Nasir El-Rufai reportedly replied without hesitation: “YES.”
