‘People Are Dying’ - Falana Demands Accountability on Fuel Subsidy Removal

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has questioned the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy, warning that Nigerians are yet to see tangible improvements despite increased government revenues.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana urged citizens to demand transparency from federal, state, and local governments on how savings from subsidy removal are being spent.

He argued that such funds should be directed toward addressing infrastructure challenges, recalling that state governments previously repaired roads and later sought refunds from the federal government.

“We must begin to ask questions of the local government, the state government and the Nigerian government. If you say we are making more money, where are the benefits? It’s a fallacy being told to wait and wait and wait. People are dying,” Falana said.

He cautioned against returning to what he described as the “era of the fuel subsidy scam,” insisting that Nigerians deserve clear evidence of how the policy is improving lives.

The remarks add to growing debate over the economic impact of subsidy removal, with critics highlighting rising hardship and supporters arguing it is necessary for fiscal stability.
