PDP Demands Prosecution of Imo Council Boss Over Alleged Inciting Remarks

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has called for the prosecution of Orlu Local Government Chairman, Chris Mbarie, over alleged inciting comments against opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP condemned remarks attributed to Mbarie, who was accused of declaring that opposition parties would not be allowed to operate freely in Orlu LGA.

A video of the statement has circulated on social media, raising concerns about political intimidation and threats to democratic freedoms.

Obiaku described the comments as “disturbing” and urged the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the matter.

He stressed that if criminal culpability is established, Mbarie should be arrested and prosecuted.

“It is unacceptable for a public official to suggest that any part of the state can be declared a political no-go area for opposition parties. Council Areas belong to the people, not to the APC or any political office holder,” Obiaku said.

The PDP warned that intimidation of voters and suppression of opposition activities would no longer be tolerated in Imo State. It recalled similar incidents during past elections, alleging that the APC used town criers to threaten voters who did not support the ruling party.

The party vowed to defend the constitutional rights of its members and supporters, pledging to document threats, report violations, and pursue lawful measures to protect votes.

It also called on INEC, civil society groups, the media, election observers, and the international community to closely monitor political activities in Imo ahead of 2027.

“Elections must be decided by the people, not by threats, intimidation or violence,” the PDP stated, insisting that the era of political impunity must end.
