Tragedy struck Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday after a boat carrying about 40 passengers capsized, leaving several feared dead.
According to residents, the boat was conveying men, women, and children when it overturned. Preliminary reports indicate that only five passengers have been rescued so far, while more than 20 bodies have been recovered.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as emergency responders and locals continue searching for those still missing.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning, with families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
Residents have appealed for intensified rescue operations to save any survivors.This accident comes exactly one year after a similar tragedy occurred in Kijio community, also within Goronyo LGA.
Spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, said the command would issue a statement soon. Meanwhile, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are on their way to the scene to support rescue operations.
As of press time, details about the cause of the accident and the identities of the victims remain unclear.
