The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for Saturday’s governorship election and directed its members to rally behind him.
The decision was announced in a statement by Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP Interim National Working Committee (the Kabiru Turaki-led faction).
It came after the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld the nomination of Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola as the party’s official candidate and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include the PDP logo on the ballot for the August 15, 2026 poll.
The court found that the PDP had conducted a governorship primary monitored by INEC and properly forwarded the winner’s name.
It ruled that the access code needed to upload nominations on INEC’s portal was merely an administrative step that could not override the legal requirement to submit candidates’ names.
Despite the favourable judgment, the party said the ruling arrived too late for Adedamola to mount a meaningful campaign.
Ememobong stated that the Interim National Working Committee would not “throw its hands up in defeat,” which it said would play into the hands of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
After consultations with stakeholders, the committee chose to support Adeleke, who is running on the Accord Party platform.
The statement noted that Adeleke is a former PDP member who left amid internal leadership disputes in the party.
“We therefore ask all our members to vote for Governor Adeleke. We encourage them to go out on Saturday to vote, defend their votes and ensure that their votes count in the election,” the statement said.
The party also accused INEC of bias in handling the nomination process and urged voters and political actors to reject any “do or die” tactics, insisting that elections must freely reflect the people’s will.
