Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate Seyi Makinde has selected former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at the party’s elective National Convention held at Rilwanu Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi.
He was formally affirmed as the APM’s presidential candidate at the same event.According to a statement by Oyo State Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade, Makinde said Daura was deliberately chosen because of his security background and experience to help address the country’s security challenges.
Daura served as head of the State Security Service (SSS/DSS) from 2015 to 2018 before his removal by then-President Muhammadu Buhari.
He recently joined the APM after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he had unsuccessfully sought the Katsina State governorship ticket.
His selection replaces Ibrahim Adamu Bala, who had earlier served as a placeholder running mate.In his address at the convention, Makinde stressed that the opposition’s task ahead of 2027 goes beyond merely winning power.
He said the real challenge is to offer Nigerians a genuine choice about the country’s future, backed by measurable plans and records of delivery.
“As we approach 2027, therefore, I believe the task before all of us is bigger than winning an election. It is to give Nigerians a real choice about the future of their country,” he said.
Makinde urged the newly elected APM national officers to collaborate with other opposition parties to present a credible alternative, describing a viable opposition as essential to the survival of democracy.
He also pledged to work with like-minded politicians across the country and emphasised that the 2027 election should focus on outcomes rather than slogans or unfulfilled promises.
