The Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Kunle Olatunji, has described the just-concluded Osun State governorship election as a clear pointer to what awaits Nigeria in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement made available to the media on Sunday, Olatunji said the outcome of the August 15, 2026, off-cycle poll in Osun offered important lessons and indicators for the larger contests next year.
Olatunji, who is positioning the ADP as an alternative to the dominant All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo politics, linked the Osun results to broader political trends.
He has previously argued that voters in the South-West are increasingly open to options beyond the two major parties after years of what he terms underperformance by successive APC and PDP administrations in Oyo.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party the winner of the Osun election.
Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam came a distant third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke secured victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.
Olatunji’s remarks come amid reactions from various political actors who view the Osun contest held close to the 2027 cycle as a test of organisational strength, voter sentiment and electoral processes ahead of the general elections.
