Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, founder of David’s Christian Centre and well-known relationship coach, has stirred debate with the unveiling of his new faith-based matchmaking initiative, Mentor To Marry.
The platform, designed to connect Christian singles seeking marriage-focused relationships, offers annual membership packages ranging from ₦70,000 to ₦700,000.
According to Okonkwo, the service combines mentorship, personal assessments, and guided matchmaking to help participants pursue intentional relationships.
But the pricing structure has sparked widespread reactions across social media.On X, one user, @gatsegwasiPhD, criticized the model, saying: “You say relationships are commercialised, yet men without money should pay ₦700,000 to meet ‘godly’ women? Who can afford that if not rich men?” Another user, @DaraMoren1, added: “Relationships have been so commercialised nowadays, yet you went ahead to commercialise it.”
Similar concerns were echoed on Facebook, where commenters described the initiative as contradictory to the pastor’s earlier warnings about the monetization of relationships.
Despite the backlash, some Nigerians defended the platform. Former Big Brother Naija housemate Neo argued: “The man did nothing wrong. Since Nigerian men and women cannot choose right to save their own lives, maybe paying for counselling will unlock common sense.”
Supporters also noted that professional matchmaking services are common globally and that individuals should be free to pay for services they find valuable.
The debate highlights broader tensions around the intersection of faith, commerce, and modern dating.
While critics see the platform as exclusionary due to its high fees, supporters view it as a structured solution to relationship challenges in contemporary society.
