Former Bayelsa State Governor and one-time Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect, accusing the ruling party of abandoning its founding principles and becoming irredeemable.
In a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Sylva said he reached the decision after extensive consultations with his family, associates, colleagues, and supporters.
Copies were also sent to the APC National Chairman, the Bayelsa State APC Chairman, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Describing himself as a founding member who helped build the party “with sweat and money,” Sylva expressed deep disappointment at what he called the thorough distortion of the ideals the APC once stood for.
He criticised the current leadership’s approach to politics, saying it had embraced the notion that “all is fair in politics” and eroded basic standards of decency and morality.
He further accused the APC-led Federal Government of disappointing the vast majority of Nigerians, stating there was “neither a credible attempt nor any possibility of a revamp.”
Referring to the party as a “floundering ship,” Sylva said he could no longer remain a member.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he urged Nigerians to “vote for Nigeria and free the Country from this stranglehold on our beautiful country.”
Sylva also accused the EFCC of acting more like an organ of the APC than an independent state institution.
He said he deliberately copied the anti-graft agency on the letter because he anticipated intensified scrutiny of himself and his associates, describing it as a potential “redoubled witch-hunt” that he was prepared to face.
The resignation comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding Sylva.
The EFCC declared him wanted in November 2025 over alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of about $14.86 million linked to funds from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) intended for a refinery project by Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.
He has also been linked in reports to an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, though no conviction has been established.Sylva has not indicated whether he plans to join another political party.
