The newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has pledged to discipline lawyers who use abusive or insulting language against colleagues on social media.
Speaking during her inaugural address at the 66th NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Badejo-Okusanya, the association’s 33rd president, warned that professional misconduct online would not be tolerated.
“Such lawyers will be subjected to public proceedings for bringing us all into disrepute in the eyes of the public. So, we’re coming after you,” she declared.
She emphasized that offensive exchanges, often fueled by political disagreements, undermine the integrity of the legal profession and erode public trust.
Beyond disciplinary measures, Badejo-Okusanya vowed to defend judicial independence while demanding reforms to address delays, conflicting judgments, and corruption in the justice system.
She stressed that respect for institutions must include confronting their shortcomings.On NBA’s relationship with government, she promised constructive engagement without compromising the association’s independence, affirming loyalty to the Constitution, justice, and the rule of law.
Her administration, she said, will continue beneficial initiatives, adopt useful ideas from other candidates’ manifestos, and prioritize opportunities for young lawyers through improved access to learning and professional development.
Badejo-Okusanya also announced that the 2027 NBA Annual General Conference will be held in Abuja, with preparations beginning immediately.
Concluding her speech, she urged members to hold her accountable:“Our administration will consolidate what works, repair what doesn’t, and build what the future demands. The time for action is now. The work begins today.”
