Former Cross River State governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has cautioned opposition politicians that defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election will require unity and strategic collaboration.
Speaking in an interview shared on Symfoni’s YouTube podcast, Duke described Tinubu as a formidable opponent, stressing that the advantage of incumbency gives the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) significant leverage.
“Even if the APC did nothing, they’re the party in power. Everything is skewed in favour of the incumbent. Respect that,” he said.
Duke warned that fragmented opposition coalitions would only strengthen Tinubu’s chances, urging politicians to set aside personal ambitions and egos.
“The only way you can seriously tackle an incumbent is to come together. Otherwise, you’ll be factionalised. When we talk of rigging, we’re rigging it against ourselves because of our ego,” he added.
Using a vivid metaphor, Duke likened Tinubu to “a lion with horns,” emphasizing that confronting such a political force without preparation would leave challengers vulnerable.
His remarks come as opposition parties continue to explore alliances ahead of the 2027 polls, with Duke himself positioned as one of the key challengers under the PRP banner.
The former governor underscored that the central issue for opposition strategy will be whether rival parties can overcome divisions and form a united front strong enough to counter the APC’s incumbency advantage.
