Mirabel, the Nigerian TikToker who claimed she was raped in her residence, has returned to social media after months away.
She returned after leaving a rehabilitation programme in
Ogun. She was released into the care of the state’s ministry of women affairs
and social development in February.
Mirabel returned to social media on Saturday, 22nd of August, with a video of herself.
“I survived, so I’m awaiting your hate comments,” she
captioned the video.
Mirabel first gained public attention after posting a series
of distressing videos on TikTok, in which she claimed she was sexually
assaulted in her residence on February 15.
The videos sparked widespread concern online and prompted a
response from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).
The Lagos DSVA initially stated it was attempting to reach
the young woman.
In a follow-up statement, the agency clarified that since
the incident allegedly occurred in Ogun, it fell outside its legal
jurisdiction.
However, the situation became muddled when several social
media users cited inconsistencies in her story.
On June 24, the Ogun state ministry of justice said
investigations established that the rape allegation made by Mirabel was false.
The ministry added that findings by relevant authorities,
along with Mirabel’s admissions, showed the allegation was deliberately
fabricated.
The government then decided against prosecuting Mirabel and
instead opted for psychosocial rehabilitation.
