Gunmen on Thursday night abducted 14 passengers travelling in an 18-seater commercial bus along the Otukpo–Adoka road in Benue State.
Police have confirmed that five victims, including a four-year-old boy, have been rescued.
The bus, which was en route from Enugu to Abuja, was ambushed near the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area.
Witnesses said the attackers forced all passengers into the surrounding forest.Benue police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said a coordinated rescue operation was launched early Friday, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the kidnappers.
One rescued victim sustained a gunshot injury and is receiving treatment in Otukpo.Nine passengers remain in captivity, and security agencies have intensified efforts to secure their release.
Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, assured families that operations would continue until all victims are freed. He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to aid the rescue mission.
The incident adds to growing insecurity in Otukpo and Ohimini, where communities have faced repeated killings and kidnappings in recent weeks.
