Rufai Oseni Accuses Government of Double Standards on Hate SpeechArise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticized the Nigerian government for what he described as double standards in handling inflammatory statements, arguing that political, religious, and ethnic affiliations often determine who faces consequences.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Thursday, Oseni reacted to the controversy surrounding Senator Francis Fadahunsi’s alleged call for supporters to kill Accord Party members ahead of the Osun governorship election.
He dismissed Fadahunsi’s claim that the viral video was manipulated by artificial intelligence, noting that the senator later contradicted himself by saying he meant electoral victory through votes.
Oseni insisted that the police had enough evidence to prosecute Fadahunsi if authorities were serious about tackling hate speech. “We just need to see the man in court. That is how we know action is being taken,” he said, while expressing doubt that the senator would face real consequences.
He pointed to what he called hypocrisy in Nigeria’s justice system, citing figures like Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and MC Oluomo who, according to him, have made controversial remarks without repercussions, while others such as IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu faced harsh punishment.
Oseni also linked Nigeria’s political and religious divisions to debates over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, stressing the importance of religious balance in a multi-faith society.
He referenced leaked audio of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi describing the 2023 election as a “religious war,” arguing that subsequent comments by Gumi reinforced those concerns.
“What is said in Nigeria depends on your political affiliation, your religious affiliation, your racial affiliation, your tribal affiliation. That’s just it,” Oseni concluded.
