Bauchi Assembly Majority Leader Resigns, Joins LG Chairmanship Race


The Majority Leader of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Saleh Hodi, has stepped down from his position as the lawmaker representing Disina Constituency to contest the upcoming Shira Local Government chairmanship election.


Hodi, first elected in 2019, formally notified the House of his resignation in a letter read by Speaker Abubakar Sulaiman during Wednesday’s plenary. 


The Speaker explained that the decision followed the Allied People’s Movement’s nomination of Hodi as its candidate for the chairmanship race.In his farewell remarks, Hodi expressed gratitude to his colleagues, constituents, and stakeholders for their support throughout his tenure. 


“My experience in this House has been memorable, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my people and contribute to Bauchi State’s development,” he said, pledging to exceed expectations if elected chairman.


Following his resignation, the APM nominated Auwal Yana as the new Majority Leader. Speaker Sulaiman described Hodi as more than a colleague, praising his dedication and brotherly relationship within the Assembly. 


Other lawmakers also commended Hodi’s patience and selflessness, wishing him success in his new political pursuit.Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled August 17, 2026, for local government elections across the state. 


Chairmanship polls will be held in 19 of Bauchi’s 20 LGs, while councillorship elections will take place in all 20.
