The Federal Government has begun demolishing the ageing Carter Bridge in Lagos to clear the way for a new 1.93km structure that will cost ₦548.98 billion.
Works Minister David Umahi said the move followed multiple technical assessments—in 2013, 2019 and under the current administration—that found the bridge beyond repair. The underwater piles and pile caps in particular have deteriorated severely, making full demolition and reconstruction the only viable option.
The existing bridge stretches about 1.525km. The replacement will be longer at approximately 1.93km and will include a flyover ramp designed to ease a major traffic bottleneck while improving links between Lagos Island and the mainland. It will also feature two navigational waterways, each 105 metres wide.
The contract was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation after a competitive process that involved firms including Julius Berger, CBC and China Harbour High Tech.
The Federal Executive Council had earlier approved ₦5.6 billion for advanced engineering consultancy, design and costing before green-lighting the main reconstruction contract.
Carter Bridge has long served as a key route for commuters and businesses connecting Lagos Island and the mainland. Years of heavy traffic and exposure to the marine environment have taken a heavy toll on the structure, especially its submerged elements. Officials considered rehabilitation but rejected it after the assessments showed rebuilding would be safer and more sustainable.
Demolition is expected to disrupt traffic along the Island-mainland corridor. Authorities plan to introduce traffic management measures to reduce the impact on motorists and other users. Once completed, the new bridge and its flyover are projected to improve traffic flow.
The project forms part of the Federal Government’s wider push to replace ageing critical infrastructure.
