The Federal Government has commenced the construction of 250 two-bedroom bungalows for civil servants under the Renewed Hope Civil Service Estate in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development Muttaqha Darma, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, said the project is part of a nationwide housing intervention across all 36 states and the FCT.
He emphasized that the estate is designed to provide affordable homes for civil servants while enhancing efficiency and reducing corruption within the public service.
Darma charged contractors and supervisors to ensure quality and durability, stressing that the ministry would deliver on President Bola Tinubu’s housing mandate.
He outlined upcoming projects including 132 rent-to-own houses, 252 units in Ibeju-Lekki, 300 units in Abuja, 2,800 units in Karsana, and over 3,600 additional units scheduled for completion before May 2027.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack described the project as a milestone in improving workers’ welfare.
She noted that beyond infrastructure, home ownership provides civil servants with security and peace of mind.
She also reminded workers of the ₦10 billion annual housing loan scheme available through the Federal Mortgage Bank.
Permanent Secretary Shuaib Belgore stressed the importance of translating the groundbreaking into actual delivery, calling for discipline, adherence to standards, and timely completion.
The project is part of the broader Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which includes Renewed Hope Cities, Estates, and Social Housing initiatives targeted at middle-income earners such as civil servants, teachers, healthcare workers, traders, and artisans.
