The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a Katsina-born carpenter, Mustapha Marwana, after investigators cleared him of any connection to the abduction and killing of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
DSS Director-General Tosin Ajayi ordered Marwana’s immediate release following a thorough review by a DSS panel.
The panel found no evidence linking the artisan to membership, financing, logistics or operational activities of the Ansaru terrorist group blamed for the May 15 attack.
As part of the release, the DSS approved an initial compensation of N3 million to help Marwana meet his immediate needs and restart his livelihood.
He was handed over to his lawyer, Oghene Forgive.A security source said Marwana thanked the DG for what he described as a compassionate and humane intervention.
His lawyer also expressed gratitude for the agency’s commitment to establishing his client’s innocence.
The source noted that the compensation forms part of broader efforts by the current DSS leadership to support individuals cleared after investigations and aid their reintegration into society.
The DG has previously authorised similar payments in other cases of mistaken identity or wrongful detention.Gunmen suspected to be Ansaru terrorists attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery/Primary School and L.A.
Primary School in Oriire on May 15, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers. Two victims were killed before the remaining captives were freed on July 10 following a military operation.
Several suspects linked to the attack have since been arraigned, with some already sentenced.
