ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Imo State University Over Unfulfilled AgreementThe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU) branch, has announced an indefinite strike following the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement signed with the Federal Government.
The strike was declared on Monday, August 10, 2026, during a press conference in Owerri by branch Chairman Stephen Oguji and Secretary Lazarus Chikwendu.
According to ASUU-IMSU, despite repeated engagements, presentation of the agreement, and a 21-day ultimatum, the Imo State Government and university management failed to act on the deal, which was scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.
The union expressed frustration that while other state-owned universities in Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto have begun implementation, IMSU has remained stagnant.
Key grievances include retention of the university in the Treasury Single Account, unpaid promotion arrears since 2016, months of withheld salaries, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances since 2009, and 21 months of withheld union check-off dues.
ASUU-IMSU emphasized that the strike will continue until the agreement is fully implemented, urging the Imo State Government to act swiftly to avoid further industrial tension.
The union also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, parents, and student unions to pressure authorities into honoring the commitments.
While reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, ASUU stressed that peaceful engagement should not be mistaken for acceptance of poor welfare conditions.
