The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State on Monday launched its campaign for the August 22 local government elections in Ikwo Local Government Area, with party leaders calling for strong grassroots mobilisation.
Leaders from Ikwo and other parts of the state stressed the importance of collecting Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to secure victory across the state’s 171 wards and 13 local government areas.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by Deputy Governor Patricia Obila, presented the party flag to the APC chairmanship candidate for Ikwo, Mr Chidi Nwode. He described the party’s chairmanship and councillorship candidates as “tested, trusted and marketable.”
“I therefore urge party supporters to embark on issue-based campaigns and avoid actions capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the election,” Nwifuru said. “We have presented these candidates to you, and it is therefore your responsibility to go into communities and make them acceptable to the people. They are the best products to be fielded, so do not be distracted by negative propaganda.”
He also praised the outgoing council chairman, Mr Sunday Nwankwo, for promoting peace, unity and development, saying his administration had laid a solid foundation for the next leadership.Former Ebonyi governor and chairman of the occasion, Chief Martin Elechi, advised politicians not to turn the campaign period into one of conflict and hostility.
“I urge all political actors to respect the constitutional rights of citizens to belong to any party of their choice. We are not here to fight anybody, so nobody should intimidate or attack another because of political differences. I am confident that the APC will emerge victorious because of the people’s support for the present administration in the state,” he said.
Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly, Chief Moses Odunwa, called on party members to support APC candidates at all levels and urged residents to maintain peace before, during and after the election while actively participating in the process.
Member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, Chief Chinedu Ogah, described the event as the start of statewide political mobilisation and encouraged eligible voters to collect and safeguard their PVCs, assuring them that every vote would count.
APC State Chairman Chief Stanley Emegha thanked the people of Ikwo for their continued support for the party.
