The African Action Congress (AAC) has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to fully discontinue its prosecution of presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, rejecting reports that the case would merely be suspended until after the 2027 elections.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex Elanu, the party argued that Nigerian law does not permit indefinite suspension of criminal trials, insisting that only a complete withdrawal of charges is acceptable.
“There is no provision in Nigerian criminal procedure that empowers a prosecutor to ‘suspend’ a trial indefinitely. The proper course is to discontinue the prosecution,” the AAC declared.
The party accused the DSS of political persecution, noting that Sowore’s prosecution stemmed from his criticism of President Bola Tinubu. It described the case as an abuse of state power and a waste of public resources.
AAC’s Key Demands
Immediate discontinuation of the case by the Attorney-General of the Federation.Formal apology and compensation for Sowore’s legal expenses and disruptions.Return of Sowore’s passport to enable unrestricted campaigning ahead of 2027.
Release of seized devices belonging to Sowore and his media aide, Zainab Sodiq.End to harassment of Sodiq and other Nigerians exercising constitutional rights.
The AAC stressed that suspending the case should not be portrayed as goodwill, but rather as an admission that the prosecution was politically motivated.
“It is not magnanimity to stop doing something that should never have been done in the first place,” the party said, warning against the weaponisation of state institutions against opposition figures.
Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, has long been at odds with security agencies, including his arrest during the #RevolutionNow protest in 2019.
The AAC vowed to continue resisting attempts to silence its candidate and other Nigerians critical of government policies.
