The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Josiah Amupitan, has assured Nigerians and political parties that the commission will remain impartial in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the National Peace Accord signing on Tuesday, Amupitan stressed that INEC has “no interest in who wins or loses any election” and does not favour any political party or candidate.
He urged political actors to focus on issues rather than violence or personal attacks during campaigns.
“Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war,” he said, adding that Nigerians want “clear, concrete, and measurable manifestos” that address real challenges.
Amupitan also highlighted INEC’s preparations, noting that logistics are being scaled to manage a nationwide ad hoc workforce of 1.4 million personnel across more than 176,000 polling units.
He assured that the commission is committed to delivering credible elections. The INEC chairman emphasized that neutrality and transparency remain central to the commission’s mandate, while calling on parties and candidates to uphold peace and democratic values throughout the electoral process.
