Tensions flared in Ogun State politics on Sunday as All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, and former APC aspirant, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, traded accusations over alleged demands for campaign refunds.
Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, claimed Obasanjo left the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after he refused to reimburse her campaign expenses.
He described the request as “insulting,” alleging that her political ambitions were driven by personal gain rather than service to Ogun State.
Speaking to market leaders in Remoland, Adeola said Obasanjo’s entry into the 2027 governorship race was “an investment she intended to recover,” insisting that defectors to the PDP after May 10, 2026, were legally unqualified to contest.
Obasanjo, now the PDP’s Ogun Central senatorial candidate, fired back, branding Adeola “a liar” who lacked integrity.
She revealed that her team had asked him for three things: a Senate seat, a refund of campaign expenses, and inclusion of her supporters in his campaign.
According to her, Adeola failed to deliver on any of the requests but later offered her money to remain in the APC.
The former Commissioner for Health and ex-senator criticised the consensus process that produced Adeola as APC’s candidate, alleging exclusion and intimidation of her supporters.
She maintained that her defection was due to rejection and maltreatment within the party.
Obasanjo, who relocated to the United States after losing her Senate seat in 2011, returned to active politics last year, signalling her comeback with billboards across Abeokuta before formally joining the PDP.
