Xenophobia Crisis: FG to Evacuate 270 Nigerians from South Africa on Wednesday

The Federal Government has finalized plans to repatriate another 270 Nigerians from South Africa as part of its ongoing efforts to bring home citizens willing to return amid heightened xenophobic tensions.

The returnees are scheduled to land at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, aboard an Air Peace aircraft.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the aircraft will depart Lagos for Johannesburg on Tuesday, July 7, at 3:30 p.m.

It will then leave Johannesburg at midnight with the evacuees, with an expected arrival in Lagos at 5:00 a.m. the following day.

This latest evacuation continues the government’s coordinated response, facilitated by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and other agencies, to support Nigerians facing security concerns, economic difficulties, and anti-immigrant violence in South Africa.

The operation forms part of a series of repatriation exercises. A previous batch of 269 Nigerians arrived in Lagos recently, highlighting the scale of the current challenges.

Air Peace has been instrumental in these missions, which have historically assisted Nigerians stranded abroad due to conflicts, humanitarian crises, or other emergencies.

The move comes as fresh xenophobic protests and attacks in South Africa have raised safety fears among Nigerian communities, prompting stronger calls for diplomatic intervention while the government assures citizens of its commitment to their welfare and safe return.
