FG Launches 1.6MW Solar Mini-Grid at Federal University of Technology, Ilaro

The Federal Government has begun construction of a 1.6 MWp/1.5 MWh solar mini-grid at the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI) in Ogun State.

The project aims to deliver reliable, sustainable electricity to support teaching, research, and innovation as the institution advances its transition to a full university of technology.

Funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the solar facility will span about three acres and significantly reduce the university’s reliance on the national grid. The initiative was announced in a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olusola Abiala.

Officials from TETFund, including Arc. Ekpenyong Nsa Ayi, Engr. Aliyu Ibrahim, and Arc. Zaharadeen Ahmed, formally introduced the project consultants and contractors from Zango Corporate Innovation Limited to the university management. The team from the contracting firm includes Engr. Omofuma O., Bamigbose M. A., and Kolaru Oluwatosin E.

Rector and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mukail Akinde, described reliable power as essential for technological progress. “An uninterrupted power supply is the backbone of technological advancement. Modern research and student innovations cannot thrive without reliable electricity,” he said. Akinde thanked President Bola Tinubu, TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono, and other stakeholders for their support.

The Director of Physical Planning, Femi Ajayi, and the Chairman of the TETFund Energy Audit Committee, Omolola S. E., assured full cooperation during project execution.

In a related development, the university commissioned a new police post to enhance campus and community security. The facility was inaugurated by a representative of the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle. Dr. Akinde and Registrar Mrs. A. F. Babatola highlighted both the solar project and security infrastructure as key milestones in FUTI’s growth.

This solar mini-grid project represents a significant step toward energy independence and academic excellence at the institution.
