The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, against naming streets in Abuja without proper approval.
Speaking during the inauguration of roads in Gaduwa District to mark President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office, Wike criticized the practice of naming streets constructed by the FCT Administration as a means of generating revenue.
He said: “Give names to streets where you put your money. Don’t wait for us to construct roads, then wake up to see them named after people we don’t know. Don’t use us to collect revenue.”
Wike acknowledged that local councils traditionally have authority over street naming but stressed that roads built by the federal or state government require official approval before being named.
The minister’s remarks highlight ongoing tensions between the FCT Administration and local councils over jurisdictional powers, particularly regarding infrastructure projects and revenue collection.
