US Envoy Garcia Meets Nigerian Officials Over "Country of Particular Concern" Designation

United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, has outlined details of his recent visit to Abuja, where he held high-level meetings with Nigerian officials regarding the country’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).

According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy, Garcia’s discussions focused on strengthening the U.S.–Nigeria strategic partnership in areas including security cooperation, protection of Christian communities, justice sector reform, digital transformation, commercial diplomacy, and regional stability.

During the visit, Garcia met with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Chief Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The talks emphasized Nigeria’s efforts under the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group (JWG) to address the CPC designation, with Garcia urging greater protection for Christian communities and stronger measures to ensure the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

He also highlighted the importance of prosecuting terrorism-related cases and advancing religious freedom, noting that progress will be reviewed at the next JWG meeting scheduled for Washington, D.C., in August.
