Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have neutralized a suspected terrorist believed to be part of the gang that killed former Benue State Secretary to the Government, Prof. David Salifu.
Prof. Salifu died after sustaining gunshot wounds during an attack by armed criminals earlier this month.
In a statement released Friday night, OPWS Acting Media Officer, Ahmad Zubairu, confirmed that troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle at Jotar village, Ukum Local Government Area, following credible intelligence.
“On arrival, the troops made contact with the armed kidnappers, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire. During the encounter, one terrorist was neutralised, while an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines were recovered,” Zubairu stated.
He emphasized that the operation demonstrates OPWS’s determination to deny criminal elements freedom of action within its Joint Operations Area.
The statement further noted that indicators suggest the neutralized terrorist may have been involved in the July 1 attack that claimed the life of Prof. Salifu and targeted commuters in Benue.
