President Bola Tinubu has called on African leaders to unite in condemning the recurring attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, warning that silence would embolden intolerance across the continent.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tinubu stressed the need for a collective response.
“Nigeria condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent attacks on its citizens and other Africans in the Republic of South Africa. ECOWAS should present a united voice in this condemnation and table the matter before the African Union,” he said.
The renewed call follows fresh incidents of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which have strained diplomatic ties and prompted Nigeria to evacuate more than 1,490 citizens in seven separate batches.
Tinubu affirmed that the government remains prepared to take further measures to safeguard Nigerians abroad.
Beyond security concerns, Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the newly developed ECOWAS Compact for Regional Integration, describing it as a framework to strengthen cooperation, rebuild public trust in institutions, and ensure regional unity amid global challenges.
His remarks highlight Nigeria’s push for a stronger continental stance against xenophobic attacks and its commitment to protecting citizens while deepening regional integration.
