Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, has alleged that all Nigerian governors are guilty of diverting local government allocations for personal or state-level use.
Speaking at the Ake Palace in Abeokuta during a meeting with the Egba Traditional Council, Adebutu vowed to grant full financial autonomy to local governments if elected.
He was accompanied by his running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, PDP senatorial candidate Iyabo Obasanjo, state party chairman Abayomi Tella, and other party leaders.
“I will do something that will stun this nation and put us in the right direction. Local governments shall get their own money,” Adebutu declared.
He stressed that mismanagement of council funds cuts across party lines, accusing both APC and PDP governors of embezzlement.
Adebutu argued that empowering local councils financially would accelerate grassroots development.
On infrastructure, he criticized reliance on borrowing, pledging instead to construct roads that would strengthen Ogun State’s connectivity with Lagos.
PDP chairman Abayomi Tella backed Adebutu’s call for autonomy, recalling his own tenure as a council chairman when he received N200 million in allocation and used it to build four roads.
He lamented that current chairmen cannot point to similar achievements due to lack of financial independence.
Iyabo Obasanjo, now PDP’s senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, praised Adebutu’s vision, saying she joined his team after leaving the APC because she believed in his political will to deliver development.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, endorsed Adebutu, describing him as “trustworthy and reliable,” and noting his resemblance to his father’s leadership qualities.
“The son of a lion must resemble the lion. In fact, he is an even better version of his father,” the monarch said.
Adebutu’s remarks highlight the growing debate over local government autonomy, embezzlement allegations, and the role of traditional rulers in shaping political support ahead of the 2027 elections.
