Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has sharply criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of “grand corruption” and reiterating his call for the President to resign.
In a strongly worded statement titled “Grand Corruption: Nigeria’s Greatest Threat,” shared on his X account on Sunday, Obi pointed to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) consultation report that highlighted about N8.83 trillion in unbudgeted expenditure in 2025.
According to Obi, this massive sum was not included in the 2025 national budget, meaning it escaped both legislative oversight and proper administrative scrutiny.
He noted that the N8.83 trillion figure represents approximately 2% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), more than 35% of the N23.96 trillion 2025 capital budget, and exceeds the combined allocations for education (N3.52 trillion) and health (N2.38 trillion).
“If properly utilised and accounted for, this amount could have transformed Nigeria’s public healthcare and education sectors,” Obi said.
“It could have created hundreds of cottage industries, providing jobs for thousands of graduates and laying a solid foundation for economic development. But we cannot account for it.”
Obi described the issue as part of a wider pattern of corruption under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, which he labelled as “grossly corrupt, incompetent and insensitive.”
He warned that such disregard for basic public finance management rules poses serious threats to national security, deepens poverty, and weakens state institutions.
Reiterating his earlier demand, Obi stated that recent revelations have only strengthened his position that President Tinubu should step down due to incompetence, lack of compassion, and failure to deliver on campaign promises.
“The recent report from the IMF consultation further raises concerns about the scale of grand corruption under the Tinubu government,” he added.
“This is horrible. We have a lot to worry about regarding the state of corruption under President Tinubu.”
