Tinubu Approves New Army Battalion for Kwara State to Tackle Banditry, Kidnapping

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army battalion in Kwara State as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes in the region.

The battalion will be sited in Omu Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area.

It is expected to enhance troop presence and improve military operations in vulnerable communities frequently targeted by kidnappers and bandits.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced the approval in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola.

He described the decision as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling security challenges across the state.

“We are confident the new battalion will greatly strengthen counterterrorism and anti-kidnapping operations,” the governor said. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the swift approval.

Governor AbdulRazaq also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for fast-tracking the request, as well as the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies for their ongoing collaboration.

He noted that security forces are currently conducting coordinated operations to rescue kidnapped victims and clear criminal elements from forests in the state.

The new formation comes amid heightened concerns over insecurity, particularly in areas like Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, where residents have reported repeated bandit attacks.

This development is seen as a significant boost to the state’s security architecture and a proactive response to the evolving threats in parts of Kwara.
