'Time Running Out’ – Ejiofor Responds After Nnamdi Kanu Ends Legal Representation

Legal practitioner Ifeanyi Ejiofor has broken his silence following the decision of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to terminate his services as personal lawyer.

Kanu, in a letter dated July 22 from Sokoto Correctional Centre, formally ended Ejiofor’s retainership and cautioned him against making public statements or disclosing confidential information obtained during his legal work.

Reacting in a statement shared on Facebook, Ejiofor dismissed what he called “the curious panic of those confronted by nothing but silence.”

He insisted he had exercised restraint despite years of alleged blackmail, threats, and defamatory petitions orchestrated against him.

Ejiofor claimed Kanu had repeatedly targeted him from detention, directing supporters to harass him, but said he chose not to respond publicly out of respect for professional ethics.

He argued that Kanu’s sudden emphasis on confidentiality was linked to ongoing defamation proceedings, suggesting it was a tactic to suppress evidence.

“The time has not yet come for me to divulge professionally obtained information. And even if I had intended to do so, I would have done so long before now,” Ejiofor stated.

He further questioned the motive behind Kanu’s warning, asking: “Why the sudden panic? Why the hurried invocation of professional confidentiality? Why the desperate attempt to silence a voice that has, for years, chosen restraint over retaliation?”Concluding with a veiled warning, Ejiofor said, “Time is fast running out.

"For now, nothing has been said. And perhaps that is precisely what is causing all the lamentation. It is only a matter of time.”

Kanu’s letter had directed Ejiofor to cease representing him, his family, or IPOB in any capacity, warning that unauthorized disclosure of privileged information could amount to misconduct and attract disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
