Sokoto Assembly Summons Telecom Firms Over Poor Network

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has expressed concern over persistent poor GSM and internet services across the state, mandating telecommunications operators and regulators to appear before its committee to explain the recurring failures.

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Aminu Gidado (APC, Sokoto South II) and seconded by Hon. Shamsu Aliyu (APC, Wurno), highlighted residents’ frustration with weak coverage, frequent call drops, delayed text messages, and prolonged outages.

Presenting the motion, Gidado stressed that telecommunications are vital to modern life, affecting communication, commerce, education, healthcare, banking, governance, and security.

He lamented that in some parts of Sokoto, services remain unavailable for hours or even an entire day, disconnecting citizens from essential activities.

Lawmakers noted that businesses, students, civil servants, security agencies, and healthcare providers have all suffered economic losses due to poor service, despite subscribers paying substantial charges for voice and data.

Following unanimous adoption of the motion, Speaker Tukur Bala directed the Assembly’s committee to summon GSM service providers and regulators to present a clear roadmap for resolving the challenges.

The Assembly also urged the Sokoto State Government to collaborate with federal agencies and telecom operators to strengthen infrastructure and improve service delivery across the state.
