At least seven persons have died, and 53 others were injured after a windstorm wreaked havoc across 13 LGAs in Jigawa state.
Speaking on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Jigawa
State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Dutse, Hannafi Fagam, the agency’s
executive secretary, said the windstorm affected 5,403 households in 120
communities.
Fagam listed the affected LGAs as Dutse, Miga, Gwaram,
Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Kiyawa, Babura, Kiri-Kasamma, Buji, Kaugama, Gumel,
Gagarawa and Sule-Tankarkar.
According to him, four of the fatalities were recorded in
Dutse LGA, while one death each occurred in Miga, Ringim and Sule-Tankarkar
LGAs.
Fagam said the windstorm destroyed more than 47 primary and
secondary schools, three hospitals, two police stations, residential buildings
and other public infrastructure across the affected communities.
He said the Jigawa government had approved funds for
emergency intervention and relief for victims, adding that assessments are
ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.
Describing the incident as a natural disaster with
significant humanitarian and socio-economic consequences, Fagam said the agency
is working with relevant stakeholders to coordinate relief efforts.
He appealed to international development partners,
humanitarian organisations, corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to
support the state’s intervention by providing relief materials and other
assistance to affected residents.
Fagam assured residents that the agency would continue
assessing impacted communities and ensure the prompt distribution of relief
items to victims.
