The House of Representatives descended into chaos on Wednesday during a heated debate over the alleged non-funding of constituency projects nationwide.
Hon. Alex Mascot, representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in Abia State, moved a motion demanding that President Bola Tinubu be summoned to explain the persistent lack of funding.
The motion was seconded, with another lawmaker proposing an amendment that the House should shut down for one week until the matter is resolved.
This sparked sharp divisions. Hon. Yusuf Gagdi opposed the motion, arguing that summoning the President was unnecessary since relevant agencies are responsible for project implementation.
He also rejected the idea of suspending House activities for a week, describing it as unwarranted. The counter-amendment triggered rowdy scenes as lawmakers shouted and traded arguments across party lines.
In a bid to restore order, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas directed members to vote, insisting that the House must take a clear stand on the contentious issue.
