Reps Deputy Spokesperson: “House Doesn’t Need Tinubu to Resolve Budget Issues”

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s presence is not required for lawmakers to address concerns surrounding the implementation of the national budget.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Agbese clarified that ministers, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are the appropriate officials to account for budget execution.

His remarks followed last Wednesday’s heated plenary session, where Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh of Abia State moved a motion to summon President Tinubu over alleged poor implementation of constituency projects.

The motion divided lawmakers, prompting Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to rule that Ikwechegh had deviated from the original document by introducing an unapproved prayer.

Agbese defended the Speaker’s handling of the situation, describing Abbas as calm, fair, and committed to parliamentary integrity. He urged Nigerians not to politicise the House’s oversight functions, stressing that lawmakers remain focused on ensuring accountability and effective use of public funds.

“The House does not need Mr President to appear before it to resolve budget-related issues. The relevant ministers and the Office of the Accountant-General are the right people to answer the questions members are asking because they are directly involved in budget implementation,” Agbese said.

He also dismissed calls to cancel the upcoming National Assembly Open Week, scheduled for July 14, insisting that the annual engagement has become a vital platform for showcasing legislative activities and strengthening cooperation with global parliamentary institutions.
