Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has declared that the establishment of state police is a crucial step toward enhancing security across Nigeria.
In an interview with Radio Nigeria Kaduna, Barau explained that the system would complement the Nigeria Police Force by recruiting officers from local communities who understand the unique challenges in their areas.
“The State Police Bill recently passed by the Senate followed wide consultations involving the Presidency, the National Assembly, the Inspector-General of Police, retired police officers, security experts, governors, civil society groups and members of the public,” he said.
Barau, who chairs the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, noted that public hearings were held across all six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory to gather citizens’ input before the bill was considered.
He assured that safeguards are built into the proposal to prevent abuse, stressing that the President would retain constitutional authority to direct the Federal Police to intervene if state police are misused to harass citizens or threaten lives and property.
According to him, the Federal Police will continue to handle national security issues such as terrorism and cybercrime, while state police will focus on maintaining law and order within their states.
Commandants of the state police, he added, would be appointed through a transparent legal process to shield them from political interference.
Barau expressed confidence that adequate funding and institutional support would accompany the reform, urging Nigerians to embrace the proposal as “a well-considered and consultative reform” that will bring policing closer to the people and improve protection of lives and property.
