A vigilante leader has been killed in Katsina State following a bandit attack on Gora Village in Malumfashi Local Government Area, sparking a protest that temporarily shut down the Malumfashi–Katsina highway.
Police spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq confirmed the incident, stating that a distress call was received around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday reporting the attack.
Security operatives were immediately deployed and successfully repelled the assailants, but not before the vigilante leader, Alhaji Nuhu Barau, was fatally shot.
Later that day, at about 5:00 p.m., angry residents blocked the highway in protest, disrupting traffic for several hours. Police and military personnel eventually dispersed the crowd and restored order.
While local sources claimed another resident was killed in nearby Gidan Barau village, the police officially confirmed only the death of the vigilante leader.
Authorities say surveillance has been intensified to track down the fleeing attackers, and investigations are ongoing.DSP Sadiq urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to channel grievances through lawful means.
